Wóma’s new collection of improvisations, Heofonwóma, is a meditation on the concealed linguistic qualities of sound. Featuring four drone works – three solo improvisations and a single duet, all created with a bow chime – these improvisations have been inspired by the idea of vocalisation; how bending tones and dynamic swells evoke an almost expressive, language-like quality; how they ‘speak’ to us in a vocabulary that feels weirdly familiar, perhaps uncannily so, but whose details have apparently been forgotten, lost in the folds of time.
In the improvisations’ short passages of resonance and silence, there exists an innate form of meaning. It’s possible to even re-imagine the phrases as collections of words, utterances reaching out to speak to us in a language with which we’ve become unaccustomed, a language obscured by the haze of evolution. It’s a primordial language, for sure, but it’s one that has rippled through our conceptualisations of speech and thought; one that perhaps even underpins the way we express ourselves today; perhaps it’s even language in its raw, elemental state, stripped back to a primal form of emotive expression.
Continuing the theme of Wóma’s first release, the name, Heofonwóma, is an old English word translating to mean, a voice from the heavens.
The work is available as a limited edition CDr, housed within a recycled cardboard sleeve featuring individually hand-inked artwork by Wóma. It's also available as a digital download.
